Prisons Department in Kerala began in 1956 with the formation of the State of Kerala. The Department of Prisons was formed by amalgamating the prisons of Travancore-Cochin State and British Malabar State. The first administrative report on prisons in the state of Travancore was published in 1862-63 during the reign of Sir T. Madhava Rao. According to the report, there was a principal jail in Thiruvananthapuram (Fort), divisional jails in Kollam and Alappuzha and sub-jails attached to the district courts. Established in 1861 in the old barracks of the Nair Brigade, the Principal's Jail was upgraded to the Central Jail in 1873. In 1886, the prison was relocated to its present location in the Poojappura.Applications are invited online only by One Time Registration from qualified candidates for the post mentioned below.
