Prisons Department in Kerala began in 1956 with the formation of the State of Kerala. The Department of Prisons was formed by amalgamating the prisons of Travancore-Cochin State and British Malabar State. The first administrative report on prisons in the state of Travancore was published in 1862-63 during the reign of Sir T. Madhava Rao. According to the report, there was a principal jail in Thiruvananthapuram (Fort), divisional jails in Kollam and Alappuzha and sub-jails attached to the district courts. Established in 1861 in the old barracks of the Nair Brigade, the Principal's Jail was upgraded to the Central Jail in 1873.
